Spike Technologies exists because the gap between what South African organisations need from technology and what they are usually sold is wider than it should be.
Why Spike exists
Most organisations here are offered one of two things. A cheap template site or a break-fix technician on the one hand, or an enterprise consultancy priced for a bank on the other. Between those, very little — which leaves a large number of capable, growing organisations running on tools that stopped fitting years ago.
Spike was built to sit in that gap: engineering standards that would hold up anywhere, delivered at a scale and price that a South African business of twenty or two hundred people can actually engage with.
How we work
We start with how the work actually happens, not with what we would like to build. That means sitting with the people doing the job and documenting the process including its workarounds — which is usually where the real problem turns out to be.
We deliver in working increments rather than disappearing for four months. It is less dramatic than a big reveal, and it means you can redirect us while redirecting is still cheap.
And we say no. If a project should not be built, or should be bought off the shelf, or is not something we are the right people for, we would rather say that than take the work and disappoint you slowly.
Our technology philosophy
Choose the boring technology unless there is a specific reason not to. Well-understood tools with large communities and long support horizons outlast whatever is currently exciting, and the person maintaining your system in three years will thank you.
Build to be left. Source code, accounts and data belong to the client, and our documentation is written so that another team could take over. A supplier who makes leaving difficult has an incentive we do not want.
Measure rather than assert. Performance budgets, tested restores, accuracy figures on AI features. Claims that cannot be verified are marketing, not engineering.
African context, global standard
Building here shapes what you build. Connectivity is not uniform, load-shedding is an engineering constraint rather than an edge case, and data costs mean a heavy application is a real barrier to the people meant to use it.
That produces better software. Offline-first field applications, sites that load quickly on a mobile connection, and infrastructure designed for interruption are not compromises — they are the discipline that makes systems robust everywhere.
